2010 Proclaimed United Nations International Year of Youth

The United Nations has proclaimed an International Year of Youth starting on 12 August 2010. The year will aim to harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in overcoming the challenges facing humankind, from enhancing peace to boosting economic development. It is also intended to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations, to promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity, and to foster progress in the attainment of the UN Millennium Goals.

Several international events are scheduled throughout the year, including the Fifth World Youth Congress from 31 July to 13 August in Istanbul, and the World Conference for Youth in Mexico City from 24 to 27 August. Both gatherings will focus on youth and sustainable development in the context of the MDGs. The inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from 14 to 26 August will seek to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

It is at the very core of the YFJ's work to involve young people in the process of policy making, as it promotes the participation of young people at the local, regional, national, European and global levels to shape social, economic, cultural and environmental life. Young people must be at the heart of youth policy, not as clients, but as actors and contributors to this dynamic process. The Forum aims to achieve these goals 2010 through continued work in the field with its relevant partners.
