50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome

In brief

At the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the European Commission is organising a Youth Summit in March 2007. This Youth Summit will be a high visibility event, which is to fit in the structured dialogue with youth organisations and the follow-up to the Plan D initiative. The Rome Youth Summit, which will take place in parallel with the European Council’s Summit in Berlin, should produce concrete youth input for the debate on the future of Europe.

The Youth Summit in Rome will take place in parallel with the European Council’s Berlin Summit in March. This event is part of a “youth package” developed by the European Commission linked to the 50 th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which also includes the Spring Day in Europe , the project “United Schools of Europe ” and the initiative “50 faces of Europe ”.

There is however a need for a thorough preparation of the Rome Youth Summit, as well as a possibility to feed into the Conclusions of the European Council summit in Berlin . Therefore, the European Commission and YFJ have set up a process for debate and consultation that comprises three stages: a pre-Summit in Brussels , time for debates at national, regional and local level, and the final Youth Summit in Rome.

This web page, along with the 50 th anniversary web site of the European Commission, www.50.europa.eu, (accessible beginning of January 2007) will report about the preparatory meeting in Brussels , the national debates in the Member States and the Youth summit in Rome.

Overall objectives of the consultation process

  • Involve European youth organisations in the ongoing debate on the future of the European Union

  • Develop a youth input for the Berlin European Council Summit

  • Present the common conclusions as “a message from youth for the future of the EU at the occasion of the 50 th anniversary”

  • Give visibility to the youth involvement in the debates on the future of the European Union

  • Create a sustainable framework for the interaction with youth organisations that would be initiated by means of the Youth Summit and will continue to build on its results in the run up to the EP elections in 2009

  • Set in motion a process which can build up a momentum for a Get-out-the-vote youth campaign in 2009
