EMPL Committee strengthens youth perspective in recommendation on long-term unemployment

October 13, 2015

The Committee on Employment and Social Affairs today voted upon an oral question and a resolution on the integration of the long-term unemployed into the labour market. In the resolution, the committee valued the lessons learnt from the Youth Guarantee implementation and stressed the continued efforts that are needed to implement the Youth Guarantee. This is in line with a vote on the general budget resolution that the Committee on Budgets voted upon today, where an additional €473 million was introduced into the draft budget 2016 for the Youth Employment Initiative.

In the oral question to the Council, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs also realized the important role the civil society, including youth organisations plays by asking how it was planning to include all relevant stakeholders like NGOs.

The Youth Forum has welcomed the proposal for a Council recommendation on long-term unemployment. However, we regret that the proposal does not specifically address the needs of young long-term unemployed and does not take on board lessons learnt from the implementation of the Youth Guarantee.
