The European Youth Forum together with InternsGoPro and other youth-led organisations across the world will organise the first ever International Interns Day on the 10th of November, with events taking place in Switzerland, Belgium, France, Australia, the United States and other countries.

In a situation where 59 percent of interns in Europe are unpaid, Interns Day 2015 aims at both empowering the interns’ community and achieving concrete political change.

In Brussels, for example, Interns Day will include debates with Members of the European Parliament, employers and social partners, workshops with young people and a demonstration.

While 4.5 million European students per year carry out an internship, 40 percent work without a contract and 30 percent have no learning content in their training, InternsGoPro reports.

“If traineeships are really to facilitate access to employment, they must offer quality learning content and adequate working conditions,” says Marianne Thyssen, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. “Traineeships should not act as a cheap substitute for regular jobs.”

Ahead of Interns Day 2015, the European Youth Forum is conducting a survey on internships. It can be filled here. Read more about Interns Day here. For Brussels participants, don’t miss out, register here. Invite your contacts to the event on Facebook and raise awareness on Twitter using #internsday.
