Six cities short-listed for European Youth Capital 2016

10/04/2013

Brussels, 10th April 2013 // Badajoz (Spain), Galway (Ireland), Ganja (Azerbaijan), La Laguna (Spain), Varna (Bulgaria) and Vilnius (Lithuania) have been selected to compete for the title of European Youth Capital (EYC) 2016.

These six cities will continue to compete for the coverted title, during which they will have the opportunity to present youth-related cultural, social and political events and activities. As with previous competitions, the European Youth Capital 2016 will encourage the implementation of the Council of Europe’s Charter on Local and Regional Participation of Young People through the promotion of new ideas and innovative projects. EYC initiatives lay the foundations for young people’s active participation in society and present good practice examples to other European municipalities.

2016’s short-listed cities beat off competition from A Coruña (Spain), Gran Canaria (Spain), Konya (Turkey), Limassol (Cyprus) and Plovdiv (Bulgaria) to advance to the second round, where they will need to receive recommendations from an independent jury and a youth focus group before June. The winning city will be announced on 23rd November during an awarding ceremony in Thessaloniki, Greece (EYC 2014).

Youth participation in towns and cities: The Council of Europe's updated Charter

13/03/2026

Young people are, as the Council of Europe's updated Charter on youth participation puts it plainly, "the generation that will be most affected by today's decisions." They have a right to participate in those decisions. But rights on paper mean little without the conditions to exercise them. That is exactly what the newly revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life sets out to define.

The housing crisis is at boiling point but the European Parliament doesn’t seem to know

10/03/2026

On 10 March, the European Parliament adopted its final report on tackling the housing crisis in the European Union. Young people are living through a housing disaster, and its impact goes far beyond the four walls of a home. If you read the final report, however, you might be excused for thinking that the housing crisis isn’t that much of a crisis at all.
