5. Funding, funding, funding
If there is one topic that comes up again and again within our membership, it is funding.
Funding, funding, and more funding!
Like a lionfish, the issue is very visible and widely spread. Securing enough resources to sustain activities and grow impact remains a key concern across youth organisations.
Building financial resilience
Youth organisations depend on external funding to carry out their work. Relying heavily on one funding source can create risks. When most of the income comes from a single donor or institution and is suddenly removed, it can act as a “kill-switch” for the organisation’s survival. In some situations, and especially with project-based funding, it can also create pressure. Changes in priorities, conditions, or timelines may influence how organisations plan their work and the need to deliver on specific deliverables might hinder the capacity to adapt. Over time, this dependency can quietly limit strategic freedom, leading organisations to self-censor or avoid certain actions to secure core funding.
Why this matters
When all income comes from a single source organisations may experience:
- Sudden changes in funding which can disrupt or stop activities and high dependency increases vulnerability
- Pressure to adjust priorities to fit funding conditions
- Limited decision-making affecting independence
- Limited flexibility in planning
- Hesitation to take certain positions or actions
These risks are not always visible at first, but they can affect both strategy and long-term sustainability.
What is financial resilience
Building financial resilience does not mean eliminating risk or securing every possible funding stream. Instead, it means anticipating vulnerabilities, diversifying funding where possible, prioritising operating grants and funding (that’s to say, funding that you can use freely for instance to pay your office running costs, administrative costs, etc.) grant over project-based funding and making conscious choices that align with your mission and values. A resilient organisation is one that can adapt, continue its core activities, and maintain its independence and integrity even when funding conditions change.
What this chapter offers
This session invites you to kickstart an honest conversation about the resilience of your funding. It is designed as a starting point for reflection and discussion. This is not a step-by-step guide for achieving financial sustainability. It aims to help you identify key questions and start conversations that can be developed further beyond this session.
