The League of Young Voters wins Digital Communication Award!

22/09/2014

Last Friday (19 September), The League of Young Voters, an initiative of the European Youth Forum, won a Digital Communication Award in Berlin for their fake campaign “Responsible Democracy.”

Can you imagine a Europe where you didn’t matter till the age of 25?

For The League of Young Voters, this was the mission of their fake campaign, “Responsible Democracy.”

With hopes of getting young voters engaged and talking about their right to vote, The League of Young Voters created a fake lobbying group whose mission it was to change the voting age to 25. They created a Facebook page, a Twitter and a website and started targeting young people and policy makers, both through social media, as well as some guerilla marketing tactics, such as stickers with their logo appearing all over Brussels.

This certainly had an impact and the group started to make quite a ruckus, spurring responses condemning the group and its demands from young people and MEPs alike. In the end, The League of Young Voters succeeded in getting their point across to young voters: “Make your choice before others make it for you.”

In recognition of their effective campaign, The League of Young Voters and Fleishman Hillard, the communications agency that led the campaign, won the NGO category for “stimulating EU youth and their concerns ahead of the 2014 European Parliament elections” at the Digital Communication Awards in Berlin.

The League of Young Voters, an initiative launched in 2013, works to tackle decreasing youth participation in elections and also encourages candidates and political parties to target young people in their campaigns. By getting young people involved in politics early and often, we can ensure that youth rights are seen as the political priority that they are.

The European Youth Forum is delighted that The League of Young Voters’ campaign has been recognised at an international level and we look forward to many more engaging campaigns to come.
