Guaranteeing youth safety and rights in the digital world: a call for a balanced approach

08/11/2025

In recent years, European institutions, governments, and online platforms have taken steps to make social media safer, often as part of broader digital strategies.

However, some of the proposed responses threaten to undo the many extensive steps the European Union has taken to protect, respect, and empower young people in the digital age. In addition, some of the proposed measures risk ultimately missing their goal, due to a forbidden fruit-effect and likely circumvention through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or other instruments. As a consequence of fear taking over from reason, young people are at risk of being worse off than they are now.
